Whilst I have completely missed the hype surrounding ‘One Day’, I thought it was only time to jump on the band wagon, a mere three months after the release date in February, and see if this ‘flawless romcom’ (as The Guardian describes it) is worth all the attention it got?
First, we must acknowledge that this is not a new concept, and I don’t mean the story line of two lovers who are right person wrong time. One Day is in fact a film and a book that has been turned into a limited series, so if you have either read or watched this story, you’ll know what to expect. But if you haven’t, and if you have somehow been able to avoid the spoilers, which I am very jealous of, you are in for a treat!
This is an epic love story that spans over 20 years, with all the episodes taking place on the 15th of July, St Swithin’s Day. The series starts with heart throb Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) and quiet girl Emma Morley (Ambiks Mod) meeting on the night of their graduation from Edinburgh university. From the first episode to the last, it grips your heart and mind, and tissues are a necessary viewing accessory.
As the series unfolds, we witness the evolution of Dexter and Emma’s relationship, from the initial sparks of attraction to the complexities of love and friendship. As well as seeing the journey they take as individuals trying to navigate their own lives.
As a viewer we learn life lessons alongside the characters. The main one I took away was to live life as if it’s your last day on earth, as you never know what might happen. Date that boy, buy those shoes, and eat that cake!
As the main character Emma says, ‘Imagine one selected day struck out of your life and think how different its course would have been.’
Whilst, I must confess at the beginning I did not enjoy this series, as I thought it was unbelievable and hard to follow, and someone who has read the book I expected a lot more, and different things. As I continued watching, I found myself crying, laughing, and feeling annoyance towards the characters.
In the end, “One Day” is more than just a romcom: it’s a poignant reminder of the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit. So, if you’re looking for a series that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you contemplating the complexities of life, look no further than “One Day”. It’s a journey worth taking, filled with laughter, tears, and ultimately, hope.
