As we begrudgingly say goodbye to summer, we welcome the turning leaves, cooling temperatures and darkening nights with gritted teeth. Unless of course you are a fashion girl which means this is your time to shine with overcoats, boots and layering. Suede is a fabric that you will see all your favourite celebrities and influencers styling this season, as it is a big trend for autumn winter 2024 fashion. Suede is a classic and timeless staple that reinvents itself every season, with this year reviving the 70s trend.
The suede trend derives from the 1920s, where it was being used as a symbol of elegance and status, often being used to make soft gloves which were highly sort after amongst the 18th century French aristocracy. With the term suede deriving from the French phrase “gants de suede”, which means gloves from Sweden, Sweden being where suede began its life. The trend did not stop at gloves, it continued to footwear, bags, gloves and coats. All these items were coveted among the fashionable elite. Saying this the 60s and 70s is when suede found its footing within popular culture, soon becoming synonymous with the years of rebellious spirit with women wearing fringed jackets, boots and miniskirts.
Like many years before, we have seen the boho and western themes gain popularity throughout fashion. So, it seemed only right to bring back the suede fringed jackets to intertwine big trends of 2024.
During AW24 fashion week we saw designers adapt to previous designs for the colder months, whilst also bringing out these pieces in shades of moss green, sage and rust. Key designs on the runway were Bottega Veneta’s sky blue jacket and skirt set, J W Anderson’s suede slippers and Bermudas, and Miu Miu’s 1970s inspired blazer with beads and rhinestones.
This trend can be quite the investment piece, but we can start to see suede filtering down into the mainstream and Highstreet with more affordable versions using faux suede. Also, this is the perfect opportunity to shop preloved and second-hand using charity shops, vinted and Depop. This will be something you can reach for each spring, summer, autumn and winter so cost per wear will be very low, and you can almost girl maths the jacket.
In terms of styling, versatility to this trend is the key to its appeal. Jackets can be used for warmth, to smarten up an outfit, as a layering piece but also can be worn with everything. These rules apply for skirts, shirts, shoes and bags. To see my top picks scroll down…
